Lake Viitna (Estonian: Viitna Pikkjärv) is a small, forest-fringed lake in northern Estonia whose surface water temperatures follow the typical seasonal pattern of shallow boreal lakes. In late spring and early summer the surface commonly ranges from about 10–17 °C (50–63 °F) as ice melts and sun-warmed layers form. Mid-summer often brings the warmest conditions, frequently 17–22 °C (63–72 °F) and in warm years reaching around 24–25 °C (75–77 °F). By autumn the water cools to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), and in winter the lake usually freezes over with water under the ice close to 0–4 °C (32–39 °F).
Swimming in Viitna Pikkjärv is generally possible where shore access exists and many visitors do swim there in summer because temperatures become comfortable and the setting is natural and accessible. Designated bathing spots in Estonia are subject to local water-quality checks, so swimming is advisable at monitored sites; outside of those areas swimmers should exercise usual caution. Cold-season or ice-covered swimming is hazardous without proper experience due to hypothermia and ice risks, and water clarity and sudden depth changes near the shore are additional reasons to be cautious even during warm months.
