Location & Local Information
Kuhurluy Lake, located in the southern part of Odesa Oblast near the Danube Delta, is a large, shallow, and mostly freshwater body connected to nearby lakes and channels. Because of its shallow depth — generally 1.5 to 3 meters — the water warms up quickly during the summer. By late June and throughout July and August, temperatures often reach 24–27°C, making it comfortable for short swims and relaxing near the shore. The lake’s calm surface and lack of strong currents create favorable conditions for bathing, especially in clear, windless weather.
Still, Kuhurluy is primarily a natural wetland area rather than a resort lake. The water can sometimes appear cloudy or greenish due to algae, especially during hot spells. Locals swim there mainly in clean, open areas where the bottom is firmer and entry into the water is gradual. Although it’s not an official swimming destination, it offers peaceful and warm conditions for those who enjoy quiet, natural places and don’t mind rustic surroundings.
