Location & Local Information
Blatačko Lake, located in the mountains of southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina near the canyon of the river Rakitnica, is a small glacial lake surrounded by steep cliffs and alpine meadows. Due to its high altitude of about 1,150 meters, the water remains cold throughout most of the year. In winter, the surface often freezes as temperatures drop below 0°C, while in spring it warms slowly to around 6–10°C. During the summer months, even with warm air temperatures, the lake rarely exceeds 14–16°C. In autumn, it quickly cools again to about 8–10°C.
Swimming in Blatačko Lake is technically possible but not common. The water is clear and beautiful but very cold, which limits comfort and swimming duration. The lake lies within a pristine natural area, often visited by hikers and nature photographers rather than swimmers. There are no official swimming facilities or safety measures, and the rocky shores make access somewhat difficult. Because of its untouched mountain setting, Blatačko Lake is best enjoyed for its scenery rather than bathing.
