Location & Local Information
Prokoško Lake, located on Vranica Mountain near the town of Fojnica in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the most famous glacial lakes in the country. Situated at an altitude of about 1,670 meters, it is surrounded by wooden mountain huts and pristine nature. Because of its elevation, the water remains cold throughout most of the year. In winter, the lake often freezes, with temperatures close to 0–2°C. In spring, it slowly warms to 6–10°C, while in summer it rarely exceeds 15–18°C, even during the warmest months. In autumn, the water cools again to 8–12°C.
Swimming in Prokoško Lake is technically possible but not common. The water is exceptionally clear and fresh but remains quite cold, which limits comfort for longer bathing. The lake lies within a protected natural area, so swimming is not officially promoted to preserve the fragile mountain ecosystem. Visitors mostly come for hiking, photography, and enjoying the peaceful landscape. However, some adventurous swimmers take short dips in summer to experience the refreshing alpine water. Prokoško Lake’s beauty and purity make it one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most picturesque mountain destinations.
