Blidinje Lake, located in the Blidinje Nature Park between the Čvrsnica and Vran mountains in Herzegovina, is one of the highest lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated at about 1,180 meters above sea level. Because of its elevation and mountain surroundings, the lake’s water remains cold for most of the year. In winter, the temperature drops close to freezing, often between 0 and 3°C, and the surface can partially freeze. In spring, it slowly warms to 6–10°C, while during summer, even on warm days, it rarely exceeds 16–18°C. In autumn, it cools again to around 8–12°C.
Swimming in Blidinje Lake is technically possible but not common. The water is very clear yet cold, making it suitable only for short, refreshing dips during the warmest months. Because it lies in a protected natural area, the lake has no developed beaches or facilities for swimming. Most visitors come for hiking, photography, and nature observation rather than bathing. Still, its tranquil setting and mountain reflections create a stunning environment for relaxation and contact with untouched nature.
