Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, is situated on the banks of the Vardar River, which flows through the city and gives it both natural beauty and a sense of freshness. The Vardar has a continental temperature regime with wide seasonal variations. In winter, the water temperature drops to around 3–6 °C, while in spring it gradually rises. During summer, the temperature reaches 22–26 °C in shallower areas, especially in calmer parts of the river. Despite its relatively warm surface in the hottest months, the Vardar maintains a steady flow that keeps the water oxygenated and refreshing.
Swimming in the Vardar within Skopje is technically allowed but not recommended due to variable currents and water quality concerns. Some residents occasionally cool off near quieter banks during very hot days in July and August, but organized swimming is rare.
