Location & Local Information
Kaçanik (Kaçaniku / Качаник) is a town in southern Kosovo situated on the banks of the Lepenac River, which flows from the Sharr Mountains. Due to its mountain-fed source, the Lepenac generally maintains a cool temperature throughout the year. Winter temperatures are naturally low, typically ranging from 4∘C to 8∘C. However, studies indicate that during the peak summer months, the water temperature in the lower course can reach a maximum of 20∘C to 24∘C, particularly in sections with slower flow and greater exposure to solar radiation near the town.
Swimming in the Lepenac River near Kaçanik is not officially recommended and is actively discouraged for health and safety reasons. While the temperature can be mild in summer, the water quality is severely compromised as the river flows through and past urban and industrial areas. The Lepenac is known to be subject to untreated municipal sewage and industrial discharges, which introduce heavy metals and pathogens. This extensive pollution makes the water hygienically unsafe for recreational activities, and public health authorities advise against swimming to avoid the high risk of waterborne diseases.
