Location & Local Information
Matka Dam, located southwest of Skopje, forms the famous Matka Canyon on the Treska River, one of the most visited natural sites in North Macedonia. The reservoir and river are surrounded by steep cliffs and lush vegetation, creating a cool microclimate throughout the year. The water temperature in the Treska near the dam varies seasonally: during winter it ranges from 4–7 °C, while in summer it warms to about 19–23 °C near the surface. The narrow canyon and depth of the water help maintain its freshness even on the hottest days.
Swimming in the Treska River at Matka is allowed, but it is not widely practiced due to the cold water and strong currents near the dam. Some visitors swim in calmer, accessible sections during July and August, when the water is warmest. However, most people visit Matka for kayaking, boating, or hiking along the canyon trails. The area’s natural beauty and clear, refreshing water make it a favorite destination for relaxation and outdoor adventure close to Skopje.
