Location & Local Information
Drachevo is a settlement near the capital Skopje, and the water bodies in its immediate vicinity primarily consist of smaller rivers and tributaries to the Vardar River, along with local canals. Given the region’s continental climate, water temperatures experience significant seasonal extremes. In winter, surface water temperatures in these smaller, shallow rivers typically drop close to the freezing point, ranging from near 0∘C to 4∘C. During the height of summer, the slow-moving surface waters can warm considerably, often reaching between 18∘C and 24∘C, depending on the flow rate and depth.
Swimming in the rivers and canals around Drachevo is generally not recommended or officially allowed due to serious concerns regarding water quality. These water bodies frequently receive agricultural runoff and, historically, have been impacted by untreated wastewater discharge from surrounding urban and industrial areas, compromising hygienic standards. Consequently, while the summer temperatures may be inviting, public health authorities advise against recreational swimming.
