Veles is a city in central North Macedonia, situated on the banks of the Vardar River, the country's main waterway. By the time the Vardar reaches Veles, it has flowed through the capital and numerous settlements, which significantly influences its water characteristics. The river’s temperature varies widely due to the continental climate. In the winter, the Vardar is cold, with temperatures typically ranging from 4∘C to 8∘C. However, the long, hot summers allow the large volume of water to warm up substantially, with surface temperatures often reaching a comfortable 20∘C to 24∘C in July and August.
Swimming in the Vardar River near Veles is not permitted and strongly discouraged by health authorities. Although the water temperature can be appealing in the summer, the river in this area is subject to significant industrial and municipal pollution accumulated along its long course, making its water quality highly questionable and unsuitable for bathing. The risk of contracting waterborne illnesses is high, and the river lacks the official monitoring and designated infrastructure necessary for safe public swimming. Locals may still occasionally enter the water, but they do so entirely at their own risk.
