The Vouga River (Portuguese: Rio Vouga) in the Viseu District exhibits clear seasonal variations in water temperature that reflect rainfall, shading and depth. In winter the river commonly cools to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), while spring temperatures typically rise to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) as flows moderate. In summer, shallow pools and slower stretches can reach approximately 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), particularly on warm, dry days, and autumn temperatures generally decline to the 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) range. Local conditions such as recent storms, upstream releases from reservoirs and shaded gorge sections can make temperatures fluctuate substantially from these averages.
Swimming in the Vouga is practiced in many calmer reaches and at managed river beaches, and in general it is allowed where signage or municipal guidance permits it; however, permissions and conditions vary by location and time. Authorities may close sites for poor water quality, strong currents after heavy rain or for safety reasons, and lifeguards are not always present outside designated bathing areas. Swimmers should obey posted warnings, be aware of cold-water shock in shoulder seasons and avoid turbulent or fast-flowing stretches even when temperatures seem pleasant.
