** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Rio Ave, as it is called in Portuguese, runs through the Braga District in northern Portugal and typically has cool to moderate water temperatures that vary by season and by local conditions such as flow, shading and depth. In winter the river commonly measures around 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), spring brings a gradual rise to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), summer temperatures often reach about 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in calmer stretches, and autumn sees a decline to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). These are general ranges; shallow, sun-exposed pools warm more quickly while fast, deeper channels remain noticeably colder even in summer.
Swimming in the Rio Ave is possible in certain places but is not universally regulated or supervised, so permissibility depends on the specific stretch and local rules. Some calmer pools and municipal recreational areas are used for bathing when water quality and flow are acceptable, but other reaches are unsuitable because of strong currents, submerged hazards, dams or variable pollution levels after heavy rains. For safe swimming, people should follow local signage, choose designated or commonly used bathing spots, and be mindful of seasonal temperature shock—summer waters are most comfortable, whereas winter and spring conditions can be uncomfortably cold.
