** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Sousa River (Rio Sousa) in the Grande Porto area typically carries cool water year-round, with seasonal variations that reflect regional climate and river size. In winter the river is usually around 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), spring temperatures rise to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) as runoff and air temperatures increase, and summer can bring the warmest conditions, often in the 16–24 °C (61–75 °F) range in sheltered reaches. Autumn temperatures generally fall back toward 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). Local microclimates, shading by vegetation, and recent rainfall can shift these values by a few degrees, and deeper or faster-flowing sections remain cooler than shallow pools.
Swimming in the Sousa is possible in many informal spots and some local people do bathe in the river, but there are few if any official lifeguarded areas or published swimming facilities. Whether swimming is advisable depends on water quality, current strength, underwater hazards, and land access: heavy rain can increase turbidity and pollution, and narrow stretches or drops can produce strong currents. Municipal signage, recent water-quality notices, and local guidance should be checked before entering the river; where conditions are safe and permitted, summer months offer the most comfortable water temperatures for a dip.
