** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Rio Paiva, flowing from the mountainous areas near the Viseu District, is a relatively cold, fast-moving river with clear, oxygenated water. Seasonal water temperatures typically run from about 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in winter, 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in spring, 14–22 °C (57–72 °F) in summer, and 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in autumn. Local variations are significant: shallow, sun-exposed pools warm more quickly in summer, while deeper channels and shaded gorges remain markedly cooler even on hot days.
Swimming in the Rio Paiva is commonly permitted in many of the designated river beaches and natural pools, but it is regulated by local authorities and depends on conditions. Water quality is often good, especially outside of heavy-rain events, yet strong currents, submerged rocks and the risk of cold-water shock make some stretches hazardous. Lifeguards are not guaranteed year-round, so swimmers should follow posted signage, local guidance and avoid risky areas after storms. In shoulder seasons, wetsuits or short dips rather than long swims are prudent because of the low temperatures. Overall, recreational swimming is possible and popular in safe, supervised sections, provided visitors respect rules and natural hazards.
