** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Mondego (Rio Mondego), rising in the Serra da Estrela and flowing through Guarda District, is a largely mountain-fed river so its water remains relatively cool year-round. Typical seasonal surface temperatures in this upper basin are roughly 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) in winter, 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in spring, 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in summer and 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in autumn. Local conditions can shift these values by a few degrees: shaded gorges, deeper pools and upstream, higher-elevation reaches are usually colder, while slower, shallower stretches warm more in hot spells.
Swimming in the Mondego within Guarda District is possible in many informal spots and is commonly practiced in summer where access and depth allow, but it is not universally permitted. Authorities and landowners may prohibit bathing near dams, bridges, water extraction points or where strong currents and underwater hazards present a danger; water-quality advisories may also restrict use after heavy rain or contamination events. For safety and legal reasons visitors should obey signage, avoid fast-flowing or engineered sections, and be aware of cold-water shock and hypothermia risks even in summer. Local municipal information gives the definitive guidance for permitted bathing locations.
