The Dão River (Portuguese: Rio Dão) in the Guarda area is a small inland watercourse with relatively cool, clear water compared with coastal seas. Seasonal surface temperatures vary: in winter the river commonly sits around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), spring brings 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) as flows moderate, summer daytime temperatures rise to roughly 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in sheltered pools, and autumn typically sees 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as rains increase. Upper reaches and shaded tributaries near higher elevations tend to be several degrees colder year-round, while shallow sun-exposed stretches warm more quickly in hot spells.
Swimming is practiced locally in informal bathing spots along the Dão, especially in summer when temperatures are most comfortable, but whether it is advisable depends on specific sites. There is no uniform prohibition, yet access can be restricted by private property, conservation rules, or safety signage; water quality varies with season and recent rainfall, and strong currents, hidden rocks or sudden depth changes can make some areas unsafe.
