The Smolyan Lakes (Смолянски езера) are a cluster of small mountain lakes in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria. Being high-altitude tarns, their water remains cool year-round. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range roughly from near freezing in winter—around 0–1 °C (32–34 °F) when ice or slush can form—to about 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) in the warmest mid-summer months. Spring thaw and late autumn bring intermediate temperatures, commonly in the 2–8 °C (36–46 °F) range in spring and 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) in autumn, but exact values vary with altitude, recent weather and sunlight exposure.
Swimming in the Smolyan Lakes is uncommon and generally not encouraged for casual bathing. The main reasons are the persistently low water temperatures, which pose cold-shock and hypothermia risks even on warm days, and the natural and recreational management of the area: some lakes lie within sensitive mountain ecosystems and visitor rules or local recommendations may limit bathing to protect water quality and habitats.
