** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kardzhali Reservoir (Язовир Кърджали) is a large artificial lake in southern Bulgaria whose surface temperature varies strongly through the year depending on air temperature, depth and shelteredness. In spring the water is generally cool, roughly 8–16 °C (46–61 °F) as the lake recovers from winter chill. By summer surface temperatures commonly reach about 20–26 °C (68–79 °F) in July and August in sun-exposed bays, while deeper or shaded areas stay several degrees cooler. In autumn temperatures fall back to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) and in winter the surface can approach freezing in cold spells, typically around 0–6 °C (32–43 °F), with ice possible in sheltered inlets during prolonged cold periods.
Swimming at Kardzhali Reservoir is practiced by locals and visitors, particularly in summer when surface waters are pleasant, but it is mostly informal rather than organized beach bathing. Officially some zones — notably near the dam, spillways and active boating channels — are restricted for safety because of strong currents, sudden depth changes and boat traffic. Water quality is generally acceptable for recreation but can vary seasonally and there are few lifeguards, so swimmers should choose sheltered bays, avoid restricted areas, be aware of cold thermoclines and follow local signage and common-sense safety precautions.
