** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Shiroka Polyana Reservoir sits in the Rhodope Mountains and typically has cool, mountain-influenced water temperatures. Seasonal ranges are roughly: winter close to freezing, around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F); spring warming gradually to about 4–12 °C (39–54 °F); late spring and early summer commonly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F); and in the warmest weeks of July–August surface temperatures can reach roughly 18–22 °C (64–72 °F), sometimes a few degrees higher in sheltered bays on hot years. Because the reservoir is fed by mountain streams and shaded by surrounding slopes, it stays noticeably colder than lowland lakes even in midsummer, and deeper water remains cold year-round.
Swimming is practiced there in the warm months but with caveats: there is no extensive lifeguarded infrastructure, and areas close to the dam, intake structures or boat traffic are unsafe or officially restricted. Sudden changes in water level for hydropower, steep or rocky shores, and cold deep water increase risk, so many visitors choose shallow, sheltered spots for brief swims only when conditions are calm. If you plan to swim, check local signage and guidance, avoid restricted zones, and be prepared for cool temperatures even on warm days.
