*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Shiel is a long freshwater lake in the western Highlands of Scotland, stretching from Glenfinnan toward Acharacle. Surrounded by steep hills and native woodland, it remains cool throughout the year due to its depth and sheltered position. In winter, the water temperature usually ranges from 3–5 °C (37–41 °F), while in spring it gradually rises to about 7–9 °C (45–48 °F). During the summer months, the surface can reach 13–15 °C (55–59 °F) in calm, sunny conditions, though deeper layers stay close to 6 °C (43 °F). By autumn, the temperature drops again toward 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), giving the loch its consistently fresh Highland character.
Swimming in Loch Shiel is permitted and increasingly popular among open-water swimmers drawn to its remote beauty. However, the water remains cold year-round, so wetsuits are recommended even in summer. The loch is clean and scenic, with sheltered bays that offer relatively calm conditions, though sudden changes in weather can create strong winds and waves. It is also a popular spot for kayaking and small boat trips. Nearby attractions include the Glenfinnan Monument, the famous viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films, and numerous walking routes through the rugged hills and glens surrounding the loch.
