*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Awe, stretching for more than 40 kilometres through Argyll and Bute, is one of Scotland’s longest freshwater lakes. Surrounded by forested hills and scattered islands, it has a cool and stable water temperature throughout the year due to its size and depth. In winter, the surface water typically measures around 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), rising slowly in spring to about 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). During summer, the upper layers can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) in calm, sunlit areas, though the deeper parts remain close to 6–8 °C (43–46 °F). By autumn, the temperature cools again toward 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), reflecting the steady seasonal pattern of Scotland’s western lochs.
Swimming in Loch Awe is allowed and enjoyed by experienced wild swimmers, though the water remains cold even in midsummer. The loch’s calm bays and sheltered inlets can be inviting during warm weather, but caution is needed due to sudden depth changes and cold undercurrents. Wetsuits are recommended for longer swims. The loch’s clear waters are also popular for kayaking, boating, and fishing. Nearby attractions include the ruins of Kilchurn Castle, the village of Lochawe, and scenic walking routes through Glen Orchy and the surrounding Argyll forests, offering a blend of nature and history.
