*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Ness, the largest lake by volume in Scotland, stretches through the Great Glen and is famous for its deep, cold waters and dramatic surroundings. Because of its great depth and highland location, the loch’s water temperature remains low and fairly stable throughout the year. In winter, it usually measures around 4–5 °C (39–41 °F), rising only slightly to 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in late spring. During the summer months, the surface can warm to 12–14 °C (54–57 °F) on calm, sunny days, though deeper layers remain near 5 °C (41 °F). By autumn, the temperature quickly drops again toward 8 °C (46 °F), giving Loch Ness its consistently chilly character.
Swimming in Loch Ness is permitted and draws adventurous open-water swimmers, though the cold temperature and great depth mean it is best suited to experienced participants. Wetsuits are recommended at all times of year, as the loch rarely feels warm even in midsummer. The water is clean but can become rough in windy conditions, so safety precautions are essential. Many visitors prefer to enjoy the loch from its shorelines or by boat. Nearby attractions include Urquhart Castle, the Caledonian Canal, and the surrounding Highland scenery, offering opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, and exploring one of Scotland’s most iconic natural landmarks.
