Loch Lomond, the largest freshwater loch in Great Britain by surface area, maintains a distinctly chilly temperature throughout the year. The water rarely warms significantly, even during the peak of summer. Seasonal temperatures typically range from a near-freezing 4∘C (39∘F) in the winter months to a summer maximum of around 14∘C to 17∘C (57∘F to 63∘F) near the surface. The deeper parts remain colder year-round.
Swimming is generally permitted in the loch as part of the right to roam in Scotland, but it is classified as wild swimming and carries significant risks due to the severe cold and depth. Swimmers must take extreme caution against cold water shock, even in summer, and should wear appropriate gear like wetsuits. There are no lifeguards on duty. The loch is a central feature of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, offering numerous opportunities for boating, hiking, and exploring the nearby Arrochar Alps and the charming villages like Luss.
