Loch Rannoch, nestled in the heart of the Perthshire Highlands, offers a lengthy stretch of open, dark water that remains cold year-round. The seasonal water temperatures are characteristic of a deep Scottish loch, with winter lows dropping to about 4∘C to 5∘C (39∘F to 41∘F). In the summer, the water warms slightly but usually stays well below pool temperature, reaching maximums of around 13∘C to 15∘C (55∘F to 59∘F), making wetsuits a common choice for prolonged swimming.
Wild swimming is permitted in Loch Rannoch under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which grants public access rights to most inland waters. However, it's essential to recognize the dangers of cold water shock and rapid changes in loch levels due to the local hydro schemes. There are many access points from the road, especially near the village of Kinloch Rannoch.
