Loch Ard, situated within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, is a particularly appealing spot for open water swimming in Scotland. Its relatively shallow nature and sheltered position mean the water is not as intensely cold as some of the deeper, larger lochs, making it a favourite among wild swimmers. Seasonal surface temperatures typically range from a chilly 4∘C to 6∘C (39∘F to 43∘F) in winter to a more tolerable 13∘C to 16∘C (55∘F to 61∘F) during the peak of summer.
Swimming is generally encouraged and allowed under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, although caution is always necessary due to the risk of cold shock and potential hazards like submerged obstacles. The loch is well-used for non-motorised water sports, and its size makes it suitable for long-distance training.
