*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Etive is a long sea loch stretching from the mountains of Glen Etive to the coastal town of Connel near Oban in western Scotland. Its narrow shape and connection to the sea mean that the water is a mix of freshwater and saltwater, staying cool throughout the year. In winter, temperatures usually range from 4–6 °C (39–43 °F), rising to about 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) in spring. During summer, the surface water can reach 13–15 °C (55–59 °F) in calm, sunny conditions, though deeper parts and tidal sections remain several degrees colder. By autumn, the loch typically cools again to around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), maintaining the fresh, brisk conditions typical of the Scottish west coast.
Swimming in Loch Etive is allowed and enjoyed by wild swimmers, though its cold temperature and strong tidal currents in some sections mean caution is needed. The upper freshwater end near Glen Etive is more suitable for swimming, offering calm, clear water surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. Wetsuits are recommended for comfort even in midsummer. The area around Loch Etive is popular for kayaking, photography, and hillwalking. Nearby attractions include Glen Etive’s dramatic glen road, Ben Starav, and the coastal town of Oban with its harbour views and seafood restaurants.
