*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Vaa is a small freshwater lake located between Aviemore and Boat of Garten in the Cairngorms National Park. Surrounded by pine forest and sandy banks, it is known for its exceptionally clear water, which reflects the region’s spring-fed sources and cool Highland climate. In winter, the water temperature typically ranges from 2–4 °C (36–39 °F), while in spring it gradually rises to around 7–9 °C (45–48 °F). During the summer, the surface can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) on calm, sunny days, though deeper and shaded areas stay noticeably cooler. By autumn, the temperature usually drops again toward 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), keeping the loch refreshingly cool year-round.
Swimming in Loch Vaa is allowed and popular among wild swimmers, especially during the warmer months. The water is clean, calm, and easy to access, with shallower edges ideal for a gentle dip. However, because the loch retains its mountain chill, swimmers often prefer to wear wetsuits for longer sessions. The setting is peaceful and scenic, offering opportunities for photography and paddleboarding as well. Nearby attractions include Loch Morlich, Loch an Eilein, and the Rothiemurchus Forest trails, along with the wider Cairngorm Mountains, making Loch Vaa a favourite stop for outdoor enthusiasts in the Highlands.
