Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. Location & Local Information
Lake Hrid (Hridsko Jezero) is a small, stunning glacial lake nestled high in the Prokletije mountain range of Montenegro. Locally known as the Lake of Happiness, it is a significant natural attraction, particularly for hikers and nature lovers. Swimming is allowed in the lake and is a tradition among visitors, with local legends claiming that a swim brings good health and luck in marriage. Due to its alpine location and glacial origins, the water is exceptionally clean but very cold year-round.
As a high-altitude body of water, the seasonal temperature range of Lake Hrid is quite narrow and consistently low. In winter and early spring, the lake often remains partially or fully frozen, with water temperatures near 0∘C to 4∘C. Even during the height of summer, in July and August, the surface water warms up only slightly, typically reaching maximum temperatures of just 16∘C to 18∘C. This remains a very cold temperature, meaning swimming is refreshing but suitable only for brief dips.
