Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, is a key natural and tourist asset for North Macedonia. Due to its significant depth and numerous cold underwater springs, the overall body of water maintains a low temperature throughout the year. The surface water temperature is subject to seasonal variation: in winter, it ranges from a cold 4∘C to 8∘C. However, during the warm summer months, the sun effectively heats the surface layer, allowing temperatures near the shore and on the surface to comfortably reach between 22∘C and 26∘C in July and August.
Swimming in Lake Ohrid is fully allowed, officially regulated, and strongly encouraged in designated areas due to the lake's renowned cleanliness and pristine quality, which is classified as Category I water. The warm summer surface temperatures make it ideal for prolonged bathing and water sports. Designated public beaches are monitored by local health authorities to ensure water quality meets hygienic standards. The only precaution advised is awareness of the lake's great depth and the sharp drop in temperature experienced just a few meters below the surface.
