Lake Strezhevo is a large artificial accumulation located near Bitola in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, constructed primarily for irrigation and water supply. Due to its location in a continental mountainous area and its depth, the lake's water remains relatively cold year-round. In the winter months, the surface temperature drops significantly, typically ranging from 3∘C to 6∘C, with ice cover possible in the shallow bays. Even during the peak of summer, the influence of cooler mountain water inflows means the surface temperature usually peaks between 18∘C and 21∘C, making the water quite refreshing but not as warm as other shallower lakes.
Swimming in Lake Strezhevo is not officially allowed or promoted due to several factors. The lake's primary function as a source for drinking water and irrigation necessitates strict control over potential contaminants, which includes discouraging human recreation like swimming. Furthermore, the combination of relatively cold water temperatures, even in summer, and the lack of safety infrastructure (such as designated beaches and lifeguards) contributes to the official stance against public bathing. Therefore, while beautiful, the lake is primarily for utility, fishing, and non-contact recreation, not swimming.
