Location & Local Information
Lake Prespa is located in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, shared with Albania and Greece, and is one of the oldest and highest tectonic lakes in the Balkans, situated at around 850 meters above sea level. Its water temperature varies significantly throughout the year due to altitude and weather conditions. During winter, the temperature drops to around 3–6 °C, while in spring it begins to rise gradually. In summer, the water warms up to 22–26 °C in the shallower areas near the shore, especially around Pretor and Stenje, offering comfortable conditions for swimming and recreation.
Swimming in Lake Prespa is allowed and popular during the warm months, from June to September. The lake has several natural beaches with clean and calm water, making it suitable for families and tourists. Because of its elevation, the water remains refreshing even in mid-summer. The surrounding scenery, with mountains, reed beds, and bird habitats, adds to its natural charm. Lake Prespa is ideal not only for swimming but also for kayaking, fishing, and eco-tourism, offering a peaceful experience in an unspoiled natural environment.
