Location & Local Information
Gazivoda Lake is a large artificial reservoir primarily located in the north of Kosovo, but partially in Serbia, created by damming the Ibar River for hydroelectricity and water supply. Despite its primary function, the lake is a recognized scenic and recreational area. Swimming is generally allowed in designated or accessible spots and is a popular activity, especially near the resort areas like Rajska Banja, though care should always be taken in large, deep, unmonitored waters, and local warnings should be heeded.
As a deep mountain reservoir, its water temperatures are notably cooler than shallow lowland lakes. In winter, during December and January, the water is near freezing, around 1∘C to 4∘C, suitable only for cold-water activities like the traditional Epiphany swimming. However, during the height of summer, July and August, the surface layer warms up, providing comfortable conditions for bathing, typically reaching a range of 20∘C to 23∘C.
