Howden Reservoir sits on the edge of the Peak District near the South Yorkshire border, and its water stays relatively cool year-round. Typical surface temperatures are roughly 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter, 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring, 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) in summer and 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) through autumn. These are approximate and vary with weather, depth and wind; deeper water remains colder than the surface, so sudden immersion can cause cold shock and rapid heat loss.
Swimming in the reservoir is generally not permitted or is strongly discouraged because it is a working upland reservoir with hidden underwater hazards, variable depth, cold water risks and management restrictions intended to protect water quality and visitor safety. The area does, however, attract walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers, and is close to the larger Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs, moorland trails across Kinder Scout and scenic dam viewpoints, all of which offer safer, legal recreational options around the valley.
