Winscar Reservoir, on the western edge of South Yorkshire, typically has cool upland water. Surface temperatures vary through the year: in summer you can expect roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on warmer days, while autumn usually falls to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Spring temperatures commonly range from 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) as the water slowly warms, and winter surface readings are often between 2–6 °C (36–43 °F). These are general surface values and will change with depth, recent weather and sunshine.
Open-water bathing at Winscar is not formally promoted; reservoirs in the region are often subject to restrictions or warnings because of cold temperatures, hidden currents, steep sides and water-quality or operational safety concerns.
