Woodhead Reservoir, high in Derbyshire’s Longdendale valley, is fed by cool upland streams and tends to run cold year-round. Surface temperatures in summer typically reach 12–16 °C (54–61 °F) on the warmest days, while spring and autumn usually see 6–10 °C (43–50 °F). In winter the water can fall to around 1–4 °C (34–39 °F), and deeper water remains colder than surface readings suggest. Weather, wind and rainfall cause frequent short-term variations, so conditions can feel much chillier than the numbers imply.
Swimming in Woodhead Reservoir itself is generally not permitted: it is part of a working water supply and the steep, deep banks, hidden currents and very cold temperatures create safety risks. For these reasons landowners and water companies typically discourage or prohibit wild swimming at this site. Visitors looking for outdoor activity will find scenic walks along the Longdendale Trail, quieter reservoirs such as Torside and Rhodeswood nearby, and classic Peak District hiking and birdwatching opportunities in the surrounding hills.
