The Treska River is a major river in North Macedonia, significant for forming the stunning Matka Canyon and feeding the Matka and Kozjak artificial lakes. Originating in the mountainous western region, the river's temperature is heavily influenced by its cold, perennial sources. While water temperatures in the Matka Canyon section, particularly in Matka Lake, are consistently cold, typically remaining between 7∘C and 10∘C throughout the year, the free-flowing sections of the river can show slightly more seasonal variation. Downstream and closer to the surface, summer temperatures might rise to 14∘C to 18∘C, but the river remains refreshingly chilly even in August.
Swimming in the Treska River, especially in the canyon and lake sections, is generally discouraged and not officially designated due to a combination of factors. The water is often too cold for safe, prolonged swimming, presenting a risk of hypothermia. Furthermore, the river faces significant challenges with bacteriological pollution from municipal and industrial discharge upstream before it reaches the canyon area. Therefore, while swimming might occur informally, official analyses often classify the water as unsuitable for bathing without prior remediation, posing health risks.
