The Željeznica River is a short, fast-flowing watercourse in Montenegro that primarily runs through the municipality of Bar before emptying into the Adriatic Sea. Its water originates from mountain springs, giving it the characteristic clarity and low temperature of a typical karst river. This river is a popular destination for locals seeking respite from coastal heat, particularly in the upper and middle reaches where the water is cleanest and the environment is cooler.
The river's temperature is consistently low. Throughout the cooler months, from October to May, the Željeznica is very cold, with temperatures generally ranging from 8∘C to 14∘C, making swimming largely unappealing. However, in the peak of summer, particularly July and August, the water can warm up enough for a refreshing dip, sometimes reaching a maximum of around 18∘C to 21∘C in calmer pools, such as the famous local 'kupalište' (swimming area) near its source. Swimming is allowed and commonly practiced in these informal summer bathing spots.
