The Zeta River is one of the most significant rivers in central Montenegro, known for its generally clean, but cold, waters. It is a popular spot for locals, particularly around Danilovgrad, where certain areas like the nature reserve near Tunjevo have established river beaches. Swimming is allowed in designated or locally recognized spots, especially during the summer, but due to the strong influence of mountain springs feeding the river, visitors are advised to exercise caution and should be strong swimmers.
Water temperatures in the Zeta River are strongly dictated by its sources and the continental influence of the central region. In the depths of winter, from December to March, the temperature of the water can drop to between 5∘C and 10∘C, making swimming unfeasible and dangerous. During the height of the summer, particularly in July and August, the water can warm up enough for a refreshing dip, sometimes reaching a maximum of around 18∘C to 21∘C in calmer sections, making it acceptable for brief recreational swimming.
