Location & Local Information
The Bukovica River in Montenegro is a relatively small, pristine, and fast-flowing mountain river, known for its cold, clear waters originating from the Durmitor massifs. Swimming is generally allowed but it is an activity undertaken primarily by the adventurous, rather than for casual recreation, due to the extremely low water temperatures, even in summer. The primary use of the river's waters is for drinking, fishing, and its ecosystem.
The river’s temperature exhibits a small, highly restricted seasonal range due to its source from cold springs and snowmelt. Even during the peak summer months of July and August, the water temperature rarely exceeds 10∘C to 12∘C, making for a very brief and bracing dip. In the winter, from December to February, the river's temperature drops to between 5∘C and 7∘C, and ice is often present along the banks, making any form of swimming impractical and dangerous.
