The Río Nela, a tributary flowing through the northern part of Castile and León, shows typical continental and mountain-influenced temperature patterns. In winter the water is usually cold, often around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), especially in upstream or shaded stretches. During spring temperatures rise as snowmelt and rain increase flow, typically ranging from about 6–14 °C (43–57 °F). In summer the shallower, slower reaches can warm more noticeably, commonly between 14–22 °C (57–72 °F) on warm days, while deeper or faster sections stay cooler. Autumn sees a steady decline, with waters typically between 8–16 °C (46–61 °F) as flows and air temperatures fall. Local variations are frequent depending on altitude, shading and recent precipitation.
Swimming in the Río Nela is possible in calmer, accessible sections and is practiced informally in warm months, but it is not uniformly regulated as official bathing areas along the whole course. Whether swimming is allowed depends on local municipal rules, water quality results and safety considerations: strong currents, sudden depth changes, cold temperatures even in summer, and upstream infrastructure such as weirs or small dams can make some spots hazardous. Visitors should check local signage and recent water-quality reports, choose sheltered or monitored pools if available, and exercise caution to avoid risks associated with cold water and river dynamics.
