The Idrijca River flows through western Slovenia and is known for its clear, fast-moving water and scenic canyon landscapes. Because it originates in the mountains, the water remains relatively cool even during summer. In the warmest months, from June to August, surface temperatures typically reach 16–20°C in the slower, shallower areas, while in deeper or faster sections it stays closer to 10–14°C. In spring and autumn, the water usually ranges between 8–14°C, and in winter it can drop to 4–6°C.
Swimming in the Idrijca is possible, particularly in calm pools and small lakes formed along the river. These spots are favored by locals for a refreshing dip during hot days. However, the river’s fast current and rocky riverbed mean that caution is necessary, and not all sections are safe for swimming.
Outside of summer, swimming is uncommon due to low temperatures and stronger currents. The Idrijca remains popular for hiking, fishing, and enjoying nature, and even a brief summer dip can be invigorating for those seeking relief from the heat.
