Location & Local Information
The Rižana River flows through the coastal region of southwestern Slovenia and is best known as an important source of drinking water for the city of Koper and its surroundings. Because of its karstic character and short length, the river maintains relatively cool temperatures, often between 12°C and 18°C in the warmer months. This makes it refreshing but not particularly warm for swimming, so it is less of a typical bathing river compared to Slovenia’s lakes or wider rivers.
Still, on hot summer days, locals sometimes take short dips in the calmer stretches of the Rižana. The water is clear, and the natural setting provides a peaceful atmosphere, though swimming is not very common due to the river’s role as a water supply and the relatively low water temperatures. More often, people enjoy the river banks for walks, picnics, and the coolness it brings to the landscape.
