Location & Local Information
Zavoj Lake, located near Pirot in southeastern Serbia, is a mountain reservoir formed on the Visočica River. Surrounded by steep slopes and dense forests, the lake lies at an altitude of about 600 meters, which influences its water temperature throughout the year. In winter, Zavoj Lake is very cold, with temperatures ranging from 2–5 °C (36–41 °F), and the surface may partially freeze during prolonged cold periods. In spring, as air temperatures rise, the water slowly warms to around 10–14 °C (50–57 °F). During summer, especially in July and August, the temperature typically reaches 20–23 °C (68–73 °F), while deeper layers remain much cooler. By late September, the water cools below 15 °C (59 °F).
Swimming in Zavoj Lake is allowed and increasingly popular among visitors who seek a natural and peaceful environment. The water is clear and clean, suitable for bathing during the summer season. There are several access points along the shore where swimming and kayaking are common. However, because the lake is deep and mountain-fed, the water remains refreshingly cool even on hot days, so longer swims may feel cold. Outside the summer months, the temperature is too low for comfortable swimming, but the lake attracts visitors for fishing, hiking, and scenic relaxation.
