Studena Reservoir (Язовир Студена) near Pernik, Bulgaria, is fed by mountain streams so its surface temperatures remain relatively cool. Seasonal surface ranges typically run from about 6–15 °C (43–59 °F) in spring, 18–25 °C (64–77 °F) during summer with occasional heatwave peaks to 26–27 °C (79–81 °F), 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in autumn, and near freezing to roughly 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) in winter when ice can form in colder years. These figures vary by depth, wind, and location around the reservoir: shallow bays warm more quickly, while deeper central areas stay much colder even in summer, which can produce strong thermoclines and sudden chill below the surface.
