** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Greater Manchester
Chew Reservoir, set on the edge of the West Pennine Moors in Greater Manchester, is a cool upland body of water. Seasonal surface temperatures typically run from around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) in winter, rising to 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring. In summer the reservoir may warm to roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) at the surface on warmer days, while autumn temperatures generally fall back to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Because it is a relatively shallow moorland reservoir with prevailing winds and inflows, temperatures can be variable and colder below the surface.
Swimming at Chew Reservoir is generally discouraged and often not permitted for safety and water-quality reasons. Reservoirs like Chew are used as drinking-water catchments or are managed with safety bylaws; steep banks, cold water shock and hidden currents make unsupervised bathing hazardous. Visitors instead enjoy walking, birdwatching and the surrounding moorland scenery, with nearby attractions including Rivington Pike, the Rivington reservoirs and extensive public footpaths that provide panoramic views across the West Pennine Moors.
