Dovestones Reservoir on Saddleworth Moor tends to be cold for most of the year. Typical winter surface temperatures range from about 2–6 °C (36–43 °F), spring and autumn commonly see 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), and summer highs at the surface might reach roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on warm days. Deeper water remains considerably colder and sudden changes in temperature can cause cold shock, so even in summer the reservoir is brisk compared with lowland lakes.
Swimming is not officially promoted at Dovestones and is generally discouraged for safety and water-quality reasons; the reservoir forms part of the local water supply and has steep banks, submerged hazards and variable conditions. Wild swimmers do sometimes enter the water, but it is at individual risk and emergency access can be difficult. The area is still popular for outdoor activities: the Dovestones Reservoir trails, nearby Saddleworth Moor walks, Greenfield village, and local birdwatching and cycling routes offer safer ways to enjoy the landscape.
