Arnfield Reservoir in Derbyshire is an upland storage reservoir whose water is generally cool and varies with the seasons and depth. In spring (March–May) surface temperatures commonly range from about 4–10 °C (39–50 °F). In summer (June–August) the surface typically warms to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), sometimes reaching around 20 °C (68 °F) on warm days. Autumn sees temperatures fall back to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), while winter surface readings are often between 0–6 °C (32–43 °F); deeper water remains markedly colder throughout the year.
Swimming at Arnfield is not actively promoted and may be restricted by the water company because the reservoir forms part of the local supply and because of safety hazards such as cold‑water shock, submerged obstacles and variable currents. Some wild swimmers do visit, but entry is at personal risk and local notices should be followed. The area is nevertheless popular for walking and cycling along the Longdendale Trail, with neighbouring reservoirs like Torside and Woodhead and upland Peak District terrain providing further outdoor attractions.
