Valehouse Reservoir sits in the Longdendale valley of Derbyshire, and its water is cold for much of the year because of the upland location. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range roughly from about 0–6 °C (32–43 °F) in winter, through 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring and autumn, to perhaps 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) at the warmest points of summer. Even in summer the reservoir can feel chilly beneath the surface, with deeper water staying several degrees colder than the top layer.
Swimming is generally discouraged or not permitted at Valehouse because reservoirs are working water supplies with variable depths, submerged hazards and intake structures, and there is a real risk of cold-water shock and difficulty in rescue. For those who do choose to wild-swim, it is at their own risk and local signs and rules should be respected. The area remains attractive for visitors regardless: the Longdendale Trail runs along the reservoir, and the surrounding landscape provides access to walking, cycling and views across the Peak District and nearby moorlands such as Kinder Scout.
