Iso-Naakkima is a medium-sized lake in the South Savo region, renowned for being an astrobleme, or impact crater, which contributes to its considerable depth in parts. Swimming is widely permissible along its shores and at any local public beaches, a freedom guaranteed by Finland's Everyman’s Rights. This principle ensures the public's right to use natural water bodies for recreational purposes. The lake's deep nature and clear waters generally support good bathing conditions, and the safety and hygiene of any official beaches are monitored by local health authorities throughout the summer.
The water temperature in Iso-Naakkima follows a typical deep-lake seasonal cycle for the Finnish climate. During the long winter, from roughly December to April, the lake is reliably covered by a layer of ice, and the water temperature underneath consistently rests between 0∘C and 4∘C. The most comfortable period for swimming in the surface layer is short, peaking in July. During this mid-summer month, surface temperatures in sun-exposed bays and shallower areas typically range from 18∘C to 21∘C. However, due to the lake’s notable depth, the temperature drops rapidly beneath the warm surface layer, and outside of the summer peak, the water is too cold for casual bathers.
