Location & Local Information
Lake Haukivesi, located in South Savo in eastern Finland, is part of the larger Saimaa lake system, known for its vast networks of islands and clear waters. It is one of the region’s most scenic and ecologically important lakes, with several nature reserves and calm bays suitable for recreation. The water temperature varies widely with the seasons. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, Haukivesi typically reaches 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). In sheltered shallows, the water can briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, the temperature drops below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake usually freezes again in November.
Swimming in Haukivesi is allowed and popular during summer. The water quality is excellent, making it ideal for bathing and other water activities. There are several natural beaches and public swimming areas around towns such as Savonlinna, offering safe and scenic places to swim.
